TDs and senators have voted overwhelmingly in favour of removing the 8th amendment from the Irish constitution.
The Oireachtas committee on the 8th amendment voted today in favour of repealing the law instead of replacing it.
They have also voted to allow abortion without restriction for up to 12 weeks.
The committee will recommend that the law be removed and the Oireachtas be given the power to legislate for abortion in Ireland.
The 8th amendment makes abortion in Ireland illegal except in limited circumstances.

The proposal was supported by 14 members of the committee.
20 members voted with one, the committee chairperson, abstaining from the vote.
For the past three months, members have been considering whether to repeal or replace the amendment.
The Oireachtas committee’s recommendation will be forwarded to the Dáil.
