The Irish women’s rugby team arrived home to Dublin Airport this evening to a rapturous welcome from supporters.
The team reached the semi-final of the World Cup following an epic win over the New Zealand Black Ferns but failed to overcome England and France in subsequent games.
However, this did not stop hundreds of fans turning out at Terminal One to recognise the fantastic achievements of the squad in the competition, with The Irish Times reporting that choruses of Ireland’s Call and The Fields Of Athenry rang out at the airport.
Coach Philip Doyle also used to opportunity to call on the Government to provide more support for the sport.
“I’m immensely proud of what we’ve done for women’s sport in Ireland. I think it’s about time the Government stood up a bit and acted on what women are doing, the IRFU are backing us immensely but the Government need to start putting support into women’s sport and not just the men’s.”
