The Garda Commissioner’s Office has reportedly proposed a new motoring offence.

According to RTÉ News documents released under the Freedom of Information Act show that the gardaí want to make it an offence not to carry an emergency pack at all times while driving.

Said pack (costing €40-€50) would include a torch, a high visibility vest, a warning triangle, a first-aid kit and a fire extinguisher.

Car transportation. Breakdown of car transporation. Closeup of red warning triangle sign symbol on the forest road.

Under the proposed legislation, drivers who do not have these items in their car could face fines and possibly, at a later stage, penalty points.

The authorities believe that such packs would improve safety at roadside collisions.
