This drunk man fighting with himself is all of us

Cassie Delaney

Fadó fadó when I was a nerdy Leaving Cert student I went to the Mill Theatre in Dundrum to watch Brian Friel’s Philadelphia Here I Come!

For those who didn’t have the pleasure of analysing it for their exams, the story is about Gar O’Donnells big move from the fictional small town of Ballybeg to America. Gar is portrayed by Public Gar (the brave Gar that people see and talk to) and Private Gar (the more subdued man with the conscience). Anyway, while the intention of the story is to highlight the discomfort between the public and the private, all I ever think about is that public and private Gar are pretty much like drunk and sober versions of the same person.

One man who shares a split personality whilst drunk is Australian Steve Davidson.

Heading on a night out, Sober Steve decided to leave a message for drunk Steve, preempting the state he would be in.

Sober Steve wrote a note simply asking Drunk Steve to drink a glass of water before helping himself to the chicken wings in the fridge, which would obviously massively help Hungover Steve.

Drunk Steve, the badass that he is, had other ideas and instead dropped some truth bombs for Sober Steve.

Steve’s friend shared the note on Twitter where it has been favourited hundreds of times.

Davidson told The Mirror it’s the first time he’s written a note to himself, but is known to talk to himself while drunk.

“I’m quite stubborn when drunk so when I saw the note I thought, ‘no one tells me what I can and can’t do”, so I replied, but I remember I kept getting confused to which Steve I was talking to hence the crossed out sections.”

Poor Sober Steve.

“I wrote the note to hopefully lessen the hangover as I’m now on the wrong side of 30 and they’re just getting worse and lasting longer,” he said.
