What You Need To Know About… Travel Insurance

Know before you go!

Her

Travel insurance is one of those things that nobody thinks about until they really need it…and by then, it’s usually too late.

Whether for protection of your wallet or simple peace of mind, it pays to have a travel insurance policy before you head away on a big trip but while it might be tempting to opt for the one offered by your airline or your operator, it makes a lot more sense to shop around for the best policy to suit your needs.

So, what do you need to look out for? Here are some suggestions.

1) Will it work out cheaper to buy an annual policy?

Many people buy insurance for individual trips but if you are a frequent traveller, you might find that an annual policy will offer better cover at a more competitive rate. You don’t need to be jetsetting every weekend to benefit from an annual policy as experts say that if you fly more than three times a year, this is the way to go.

Compare Travel Insurance Ireland is a handy website that allows to check out both single trip and multi-trip policies so you can choose the right option, with annual policies starting at about €18.

2) Does my policy cover health issues and hospital stays?

One of the main reasons that people buy travel insurance is to avoid getting hit with massive medical bills if they fall ill or are injured while on holiday. As a result, most policies will cover health to a certain extent but they were not all created equal so make sure to read the fine print.

Some companies will offer an emergency assistance line to help you find care in the event of an accident, while others may allow for more comprehensive/high end care. Other aspects to consider are the excess included in the policy (the amount you will have to pay before you claim) and whether it includes the cost of missed flights due to ill health.

If you have private health insurance, check to see what your policy covers before you buy seperate travel insurance and make sure to apply for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before you travel, as this will entitle you to free or reduced cost state-provided healthcare when visiting a European Union country or Switzerland.

3) Do I have any special requirements?

If you are going backpacking or taking part in winter sports, you may need a more specialised policy so make sure to check with your provider. Taking part in high-risk activities may result in a more expensive policy but this is definitely preferable to finding out that you’re not eligible when going to claim!

4) Does my policy cover me if I’m unable to travel?

Having a policy that will refund you for the cost of missing your trip can be a major bonus but each one will have its own specifications on what constitutes reasonable circumstances. All providers will send you on full terms and conditions so even though it may seem like a bore, make a cuppa and read through all the details to make sure you have the cover you need.

5) What if I run into trouble and I don’t have insurance?

In some circumstances, you might receive support. These include delayed and cancelled flights and there is more detail available from the National Consumer Agency here.

Bon voyage!
