What Do the Words Photobomb, Bridezilla and Hangry Have in Common? They Are All Some of 2014’s Top Words!

Collins English Dictionary revealed today that they have named ‘photobomb’ as the word of the year for 2014.

The dictionary also listed other popular words including ‘Bridezilla’ and ‘Tinder’ in their final shortlist before eventually deciding on ‘photobomb’ as the winner.

According to Collins, the word first originated in 2008 when it was used in a Google search, before taking off altogether in the last two years as thousands of hilarious photos of people around the world photobombing each other in earnest began to emerge.

Other popular words that have been noted by the newest edition of the dictionary (which went on sale today) include bakeoff (as in The Great British Bake Off), hangry (hungry and angry) and a new one for us here, humblebrag which apparently, is “a statement that purports to be self-effacing but in fact reveals a person’s wealth of importance.”

Here’s two of our favourite photo bombs of recent times.
