Today is World Down Syndrome Day.
On this day, people with Down Syndrome and those who live and work with them, organize events to raise public awareness and create a single global voice for advocating for the rights, inclusion and well-being of people with Down syndrome.
The World Down Syndrome Day organization release an awareness video annually and this year’s is absolutely stunning.
It tells the story of AnnaRose, a nineteen-year-old from New Jersey. She’s a full-time college student who works part-time at a physical therapy center and enjoys basketball and swimming through the Special Olympics NJ. AnnaRose, as many people with Down syndrome, only wants to realize her potential and live a meaningful, beautiful life.
On screen, her life is played by actress Olivia Wilde. The piece aims to inspire a reflection on how people with Down syndrome see themselves, whilst revealing the inherent prejudice and discrimination that they face based on society’s preconceptions and stereotypical low expectations.
