A LOT of thought goes into online dating profile pictures.
Gone are the filter-less days of Bebo, the act of capturing and selecting your online dating profile pictures now takes time, effort and friend consultations – at least according to the most messaged woman on OK Cupid, Lauren Urasek.
The online-dating queen was informed by New York Magazine that she was the most popular woman on the dating site, and since then she has made a pretty successful career out of being a pro-dater, even penning a book about it, Popular.
Now, Urasek, who is a makeup artist by day, has revealed where she goes to capture those butterfly-inducing selfies, if that’s what you’re into.
Speaking to Cosmopolitan, she revealed: ”One day, I was at a MAC store visiting my friend and I noticed that the lighting was amazing in there. Ever since, I can’t pop in to see him without taking a few pics.”
Speaking about the above selfie, she explained: “When I was ready to snap this, there was a girl behind me who kept getting into my shot, so I (very politely, of course) asked her to move out of my selfie zone. I used this image as my profile pic for a while because it’s a pretty good representation of what I look like every day (not super glammed up).”
If you can’t make it into the MAC store to snap your selfie (effort), she recommends abiding by these four rules.
- Never zoom in. This will dilute the quality of the photo.
- Don’t be afraid to shoot your “bad side.” Otherwise, you may end up with all your pics looking exactly the same.
- Hold you arm just above eye level. Any higher and you get the MySpace look.
- Do not use Instagram filters! They over- or underexpose your photos and make you look washed out. Use apps if you want to tweak things; my faves are VSCO Cam and Enlight.
We think we’ll just stick to that blurry night out picture from two years ago – hey, if it ain’t broken don’t fix it.
