Comic Crazy – New Documentary Set to Highlight Female Creators and Illustrators

Documentary hopes to focus on the women of comic book fandom

Alanna Alexander

“You sure know a lot about Batman, for a girl.”

“Did your brother get you into comics?”

If you’re tired of hearing those questions every time you talk about The Avengers or Watchmen, help could be coming soon. The producers of She Makes Comics are hoping to change how comic-crazy female fans are treated in the comic book fandom, from cosplay conventions to comic book stores.

The documentary will focus on the talents and contributions of the female creators and illustrators who have produced alternative and iconic mainstream comics and graphic novels.

With 800 more hours of editing to go and 10 more countries still to visit, producers have created a Kickstarter project to urge fans to contribute. And what would you get in return as a backer? You could pick the comic artist of Adventure Time or the illustrator of Batwoman to draw you into a page illustrating the history of women in comics. Or you could pitch your own comic strips to Janelle Asselin who has edited comics for DC and Disney. Could you see yourself as the next female superhero? Get funding!
