Parents Ditching Lullabies for Pop Songs Study Reveals

Una Kavanagh

Parents are parting ways with traditional lullabies in favour of singing pop songs to their children, a new study has revealed.

The study, by 72point for Symphony in B, polled 2000 parents who revealed that their children preferred to sing-along to pop songs rather than lullabies.

Many parents regarded singing traditional lullabies as “silly” or “old-fashioned”, while admitting that often times they couldn’t recall the words to their old favourites.

Bruno Mars’ “Just the way you are”, Adele’s “Someone like you” and Rihanna’s chart-topping hit “Umbrella” were the top songs of choice to sing to young ones.

Robbie Williams’ “Angels”, “Diamonds” and “Umbrella”, by Rihanna made it into the top five.

15% of those surveyed still favour singing traditional rhymes and lullabies. Almost eight in ten parents sing to their youngsters, with 64% opting for a chart hit. Though a third of parents admitted that their children were more likely to settle down after a traditional nursery rhyme.

However, 89% of the parents surveyed believed that it was import that their children listen to music with more than three-quarters of parents hoping that by encouraging their children to listen to music; their children will be more inclined to pick up an instrument or embrace music.
