Thinking of doing something fun with the family this September? Well children’s charity Barnardos might have the answer.
The Irish charity is hosting a “Barnardos Buggy Push”, a 5km challenge for people with babies and young children in Phoenix Park and it sounds like it’s going to be a great day out.
One person who’s delighted to take part in the event again is mum and model Alison Canavan; “My son, James, and I are thrilled […] We had so much fun training together last year and the event itself was incredible.”
But why is this event being organised?
“CSO figures published recently for 2011 highlighted the increasing deprivation and poverty facing children and families up and down the country” said Ruth Guy, Director of Marketing and Fundraising at the company.
“Almost 107,000 children in Ireland are now living in consistent poverty. We are extremely grateful to Dettol, who cover the costs of the event, so that all funds raised by those in the buggies and those pushing them come directly to Barnardos.”
The event is suitable for runners and walkers as well as more serious athletes who want a challenge by running while pushing their baby in their buggy.
To help get you ready for the challenge, the event organisers have put together:
1) Take baby steps
If you are just getting back into walking or running after having a baby, it will take your body some time to adjust so take it easy and start slow and make sure you stretch before and after your run or walk.
2) Run tall
Maintain a healthy posture while you push your buggy. Do not lean down onto the buggy as this puts pressure on your back and may cause the buggy to tip.
3) Dress for weather
You might get warm while running or walking with your buggy but your baby might not so make sure you bring a blanket and a jacket for them so they can be comfortable.
4) Pack toys and healthy snacks
These will help keep your baby entertained while you get your exercise.
Let’s hope for good weather! The event will take place on September 1st. You can find out more about the event on their website here.
