Oscar season is fast approaching and there are more than awards to be won
It seems that hearts are the other grand prize up for grabs as there seems to be a ‘curse’ that follows the Oscar members of Tinsel Town this time of year.
The ‘Oscar love curse’ is not only super random but apparently it is a superstition that experts have actually studied. No, we’re not joking.
The Organisation Science Journal once published a study, ‘The Real Oscar Curse: The Negative Consequences of Positive Status Shifts,‘ and determined while there’s little to no evidence of a “professional Oscar curse,” there is proof of a “personal” one – the end of relationships.
Here are just some of the celebs who fell victim to the curse.
Sandra Bullock
Sandra Bullock’s split from Jesse James was the cheating scandal heard around the world.
News of James’s infidelities started doing the rounds shortly after Sandra’s 2009 Oscar win for ‘The Blind Side’ and had people shaken.
People were simply in disbelief that someone would cheat on one of America’s sweethearts, especially since the couple was in the process of adopting.
Hilary Swank
While Hilary Swank and Chad Lowe’s marriage did make it through her 2000 Oscar win for ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ after she took home the Best Actress Award for ‘Million Dollar Baby’ the couple announced their split in 2006.
Emma Thompson
They were once the golden couple of Hollywood but Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh weren’t meant to last.
While Emma took home the 1993 Best Actress Academy Award for ‘Howards End’ things in her relationship started to fall apart.
Kenneth went on to have an affair with Helena Bonham Carter after they worked together on Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’ in 1994 leading to his divorce from Emma.
Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie’s second marriage, to actor Billy Bob Thornton, ended in 2003, three years after she won an Oscar for her supporting role in ‘Girl, Interrupted’.
Billy and Angelina started dating shortly after they met on the set of the 1999 film Pushing Tin.
Reese Witherspoon
Though Reese Witherspoon often says her marriage to Ryan Phillippe ended because of how young they were, there is a bit of a strange Oscars-related coincidence in the story.
The two decided to end their relationship after Reese won the Oscar for ‘Walk the Line’, before officially divorcing in 2007.
Halle Berry
Halle Berry took home a big win in 2002 after winning Best Actress for her role as Leticia Musgrove in the film ‘Monster’s Ball’ but things weren’t so good at home.
Halle and then-husband Eric Benet separated a year after her Oscars success.
Julie Andrews
Not even the legend that is Mary Poppins herself was safe from the curse!
While Julie and her ex-husband Tony Walton have remained tight-lipped since their 1967 split it seems that it happened soon after her 1965 Best Actress Oscar for ‘Mary Poppins’.
