Her.ie Classic Movie Of The Week… Se7en

Now, this is a classic.

Sue Murphy

Every week, we in Her.ie towers will provide you with a blast from the past, a film that you cannot live without but nor should you, the classic film that you simply need to watch.

This week we have gone back to our roots here and bring you one of our personal favourites but also one of the greatest films of all time, David Fincher’s excellent Se7en.

Beginning with a newbie detective who is drafted in to work with a veteran who is near the end of his days, Se7en hits us pretty much straight away with its first gruesome murder. As the number of murders grow, the duo soon discover that they are dealing with a serial killer whose is using the seven deadly sins as a pattern for his work.

This is no ordinary serial killer as Detective Sommerset begins to figure out; he is smart, selfless and has a motive but can the detectives figure out what is his ultimate game plan before it is too late?

Se7en is perfect, there is little to no doubt about that. The sounds, how it looks, Pitt, Freeman, even Paltrow, perfectly cast, perfectly timed, perfectly written, it can literally do no wrong. The tension dials up to such a level that you will almost feel sick with emotion by the time the ultimate reveal occurs.

The script is also second to none, bringing levels to not just the characters but the world around them. Se7en explores family, the characters’ past, religion, right and wrong with everything in between by the time they make it to the last frame.

If you haven’t been sold by the above, two words will definitely win you over: Kevin Spacey. Now, get on it.
