Eastenders Recasts New Face in a Familiar Role

The character will return to our screens in the coming months.

Fans of Eastenders will be familiar with the name Martin Fowler, a character who left the show in 2007.

His wife Sonia, played by Natalie Cassidy, recently returned to the show and although she has mentioned Martin, viewers have not yet seen him on the soap.

That’s all set to change as show bosses have now recast the character. James Bye is the third actor to take over the role of Martin Fowler.

Jon Peyton Price played Martin from 1985 to 1996. James Alexandrou then took over the role until Martin and Sonia left the soap in 2007.

Producer Dominic Treadwell Collins said that James had been consulted before the role of Martin was recast and that he had given his blessing.

Dominic said: “With James Alexandrou’s blessing – something which was very important to us – we have recast Martin Fowler after extensive auditions.

“Martin is an EastEnders original – the first baby born on the Square and part of the show’s roots – and, as we celebrate 30 years on Albert Square, it’s important to look backwards as we move forwards”.

Speaking about the role, James Bye said “It’s a huge opportunity for me to put my own stamp onto an iconic character and I can’t wait to get started”.
