Add us as a preferred source on Google »Shakira has hit out at the Barbie movie, saying that her sons “hated it” and “felt that it was emasculating.”
Last summer, Barbie took the world by storm (alongside Oppenheimer) as Margot Robbie starred as the titular doll and Ryan Gosling gave us all the gift of I’m Just Ken.
And whilst the film was a huge success with audiences and critics alike, receiving praise for its empowering message, performances and humour, it doesn’t seem like everyone was a fan.
Shakira has revealed her and her sons weren’t keen on the film, and questioned the message it sends out to boys and men.
Speaking to Allure in a new interview, the pop star said her sons “felt that [the movie] was emasculating,” and that to a “certain extent” she agrees with them.
She told the publication: “My sons absolutely hated it. They felt that it was emasculating.
Shakira said that as a mum of two boys, she “wants them to feel powerful too.”
“Just because a woman can do it all doesn’t mean she should?"
Shakira
“I like pop culture when it attempts to empower women without robbing men of their possibility to be men, to also protect and provide,” she explained. “I believe in giving women all the tools and the trust that we can do it all without losing our essence, without losing our femininity.”
She continued: “Just because a woman can do it all doesn’t mean she should?
“By 2030, 60% of the world’s wealth will be managed by women.
“I think that men have a purpose in society and women have another purpose as well.
“We complement each other, and that complement should not be lost.”
Those of you who have seen the film may be thinking that Shakira and her sons didn’t quite understand the message of Greta Gerwig’s movie.
And this is probably the first time the Colombian singer has been lumped in with the same crowd as Piers Morgan.
But everyone’s entitled to an opinion!
