Coronation Street star Barbara Knox has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving, according to reports this morning.
The 80-year-old actress, who plays Rita Tanner on the soap, was held by police after driving to a station to meet her daughter, Maxine Ashcroft, who was arrested for the same offence earlier in the day.
A spokeswoman for Cheshire Police is quoted as saying: “Police stopped a car in Hollow Lane, Knutsford, and a 56-year-old woman from Gloucestershire was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.
“An 80-year-old woman from Knutsford arrived at Knutsford police station and was also arrested on suspicion of drink-driving. She was bailed pending further inquiries.”
The Mirror claims that Knox and Ashcroft, who was driving the car, were pulled over by the police on their way home. Ashcroft was taken to the station and it was found that she was driving with an alcohol level three times the legal limit.
Her mother later went to the police station to ask for her daughter’s release. She reportedly yelled: “Do you know who I am?”
Officers suspected she had driven to the station under the influence and she was subsequently arrested. She is due to answer bail on April 4th.
Barbara Knox has played Rita Tanner in Coronation Street for over 40 years.
