UK chart-topper Sam Smith has come out.

The 22-year-old star spoke candidly to the current issue of FADER magazine, telling the publication that his debut album is about “a guy that I fell in love with last year, and he didn’t love me back”.

Smith added: “I think I’m over it now, but I was in a very dark place. I kept feeling lonely in the fact that I hadn’t felt love before. I’ve felt the bad things. And what’s a more powerful emotion: pain or happiness.”

Smith was signed by Capitol Records when he was 18, following his collaboration with Disclosure on hit single Latch.A few months later, he hit the top of the charts for the first time with La La La, another collaboration – this time with Naughty Boy. Money on My Mind was released earlier this year and also claimed the number one spot on the charts. This week, Smith released his debut album, In The Lonely Hour.

Earlier this year Smith was linked to model Daisy Lowe, but he publicly denied any romantic involvement at the time. When asked how he felt about discussing his sexuality for the first time, the singer said: “I’m very comfortable and happy with everything. I just wanted to talk about him and have it out there. It’s about a guy and that’s what I wanted people to know—I want to be clear that that’s what it’s about. I’ve been treated as normal as anyone in my life; I’ve had no issues.

“I’ve made my music so that it could be about anything and everybody — whether it’s a guy, a female or a goat—and everybody can relate to that.”
