Dr. Aamna Adel, a dermatologist who specialises in hair care and has personally experienced alopecia, explains why she avoids extensions altogether.
“I'm a dermatologist, I specialise in hair, I've had Alopecia myself and let me tell you why I would never get hair extensions.
“This is honestly a story that I see so often; If you're someone who loves getting hair extensions and notice that your hair has thinned over time, it's likely the extensions causing the damage," she says.
"The weight and constant tugging at the hair follicle can lead to a condition called traction alopecia."
Traction alopecia occurs when hair is consistently pulled or strained, often as a result of extensions.
The process of applying and removing extensions can also contribute to hair loss, Dr. Adel notes.
“Aside from the weight, the way in which its ‘s applied and the way in which it is removed can also lead to hair loss.”
While occasional use may not be harmful, frequent and repeated applications can cause continuous trauma to the follicles, eventually leading to irreversible hair loss.
“Over time, it can become irreversible and it can lead to permanent hair loss.
"For those who still want to use extensions, tape-ins are a safer option," Dr. Adel advises, recommending these as a less damaging alternative to permanent extensions.
