Expert issues health warning to people who get their nails done frequently

Important to note if you’re always getting your nails done

Getting your nails done is one luxury that never fails to make you feel better. Spending an hour in the nail salon, yapping away to your technician, and spending too long deciding on what colour to go for is good for the soul.

Like getting a good haircut, getting new nails always boosts your confidence.

However, experts have issued a health warning to those who frequently get their nails done.

Finding the right nail salon for you can be tricky, but you should always ensure the salon sterilises its tools.

Many salons fail to sterilise their nail tools properly, and it is becoming a major concern.

Speaking to Surrey Live, the founder of Oblique House of Nails, Mariana Eidelkind, said:

“Improper tool sterilisation is a serious concern because it increases the risk of transferring harmful bacteria, fungi, and viruses from one client to another.

“When tools like nail clippers, files, and cuticle pushers are not adequately cleaned, they can carry harmful pathogens that may lead to infections such as fungal infections, bacterial infections, and even bloodborne diseases like Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV.”

Many of us will get nicked or cut during a nail appointment, which is relatively common.

This is usually harmless unless your technician is using unsterilised tools. Harmful bacteria can get into your body through these cuts.

“One of the most obvious is the use of visibly dirty or unclean tools,” Eidelkind said.

“If your technician uses tools that are left out on the countertop, it’s likely that bacteria, dirt, and oils have accumulated on them. Clean, sterilised tools should be kept in sealed and sterile pouches until they are ready to be used.”

Always speak up if you feel unsure about the tools your technician is using. It may feel awkward, but “a reputable salon should have no problem explaining how they clean and sterilise their tools.”
