6 New Year’s resolutions to benefit your body – that aren’t dieting

Anna Rourke

The new year – a fresh start or a new chance for you to feel bad about your body?

The festive period can be tough on those of us who struggle with guilt around food. The time after Christmas, where we’re told that it’s time to stop eating and start dieting? This can be even harder.

Each January we’re bombarded with messages about counting calories, ‘cutting out’ certain foods and overhauling how we look. But to kick off a new year feeling so negatively about our bodies is to do them a disservice.

Let’s remind ourselves that our bodies are our homes, the most valuable things we own. They’re far more important than what they look like.

Eating healthily and being active are great, but they’re not the only things we can do to look after our bodies. As 2021 begins, rather than starting a diet, here are six resolutions that you can take on to benefit your body.

Stretch

Lots of us are extra stiff from working from home so why not take five minutes in your day to stretch all over?

Apply SPF every day

Yes, even in Ireland. Yes, even when it’s cloudy. Yes, whether you’re wearing makeup or not.

Get a smear test

Stop putting it off. It’s a little unpleasant but it has to be done.

While you’re at it (and if you have boobs), get to know your breasts and regularly check for lumps or changes.

Buy a sex toy

Masturbation can help to reduce stress, improve sleep quality and even alleviate the pain of menstrual cramps. It’s also pretty fun.

Track your period

You’ll be quicker to notice changes in your cycle which could be a sign of health issues such as endometriosis or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

Take warm baths

Not for hygiene reasons but to help calm your nervous system, oxygenate your blood and even boost your serotonin levels.
