6 incredible honeymoon destinations that are off the beaten track

Keeley Ryan

In hindsight, we probably had a million and one things to consider first.

But after my fiancé popped the question in 2017, it didn’t take long for us to start planning on where to go for our honeymoon.

There’s been a lot of factors to take into consideration, even when trying to do something as simple as narrow down a destination (which, admittedly, is kind of where we’ve gotten stuck).

Whether you’re in the middle of trying to narrow down your own honeymoon destination, or simply looking for a romantic-but-unusual vacation spot, here are 6 brilliant destinations I have found through my research.

Giraffe Manor, Kenya

The boutique hotel, set across 12 acres of private land, has become increasingly well known for its surprise visitors: its herd of resident Rothschild’s giraffe.

The animals occasionally pop their head in (literally) to say hello…or try and get a bite of your apple, or a sip of your tea.

The once-in-a-lifetime hotel is in the suburb of Lang’ata Nairobi, which is located 40 minutes from the main Kenyatta Airport.

Kakslauttanen Igloo Resort, Finland

Because a honeymoon doesn’t necessarily have to be all about the sandy beaches.

The Kakslauttanen Igloo Resort has a variety of log cabins and igloos for accommodation, where you can gaze up at the stars as you fall asleep.

If you’re looking for a little added ‘wow’ factor, book your stay during the northern lights season (approximately the third week in August until the third week of April).

A Boeing 727, Costa Rica

Hotel Costa Verde has a number of once-in-a-lifetime options for accommodation – but we’re absolutely adoring the 727 Fuselage Home.

Up in a jungle canopy, the refurbished Boeing 727 airframe is the ideal honeymoon for any couples looking for something unique.

The two bedroom suite pokes out from the tree line, pointing up towards the clouds – so you’ll get some unforgettable views that will make you feel like you are absolutely flying.

The Boot B&B, New Zealand

A fairytale-esque B&B, The Boot is a whimsical retreat that is perfect for the couple who wants a mix of adventure and relaxation on their honeymoon.

Spend your days dining alfresco or exploring the massive outdoor gardens (almost 6 acres) – whatever you choose, everything in The Boot is designed for two people.

It’s also the perfect location to explore the highlights of Tasman Bay, if you fancy going on a bit of an adventure.

Makepeace Island, Australia

The ultimate kind of beachy getaway, Makepeace Island is only accessible one of two ways: via private boat form the Noosa Marina or by helicopter.

But once you’re there, it will be like you’ve got your very own slice of paradise. Especially since, once you’ve made your booking, you will have the entire island to yourself.

And there’s plenty to explore within a short distance of the private hideaway, including: The Great Barrier Reef, Tin Can Wild Dolphin Experience and the Australia Zoo.

Hôtel De Glace, Québec

This one would only really work well if you’re planning for a winter wedding or honeymoon, unfortunately – and provided you don’t mind the cold.

Hôtel De Glace, which literally translates to Hotel of Ice, is located just 4km outside of Québec City – and more than a million people have visited the hotel since it first opened in 2001.

It truly is a one-of-a-kind experience, too: the hotel gets rebuilt and redesigned every year as the new season kicks off.
