Irish boxer Kellie Harrington wins gold at the AIBA Women’s World Championships

The athlete defeated Thai southpaw Sudaporn Seesondee in New Delhi this morning.

Dublin boxer, Kellie Harrington has this morning continued her winning streak, emerging victorious against Sudaporn Seesondee in the AIBA World Elite lightweight (60kg) final. The victory was announced after a 3-2 split decision. Michael D. Higgins took to Twitter to congratulate the athlete on her "outstanding achievement", calling her a "role model and ambassador for the inner City."

The lightweight belt was previously held by Katie Taylor from 2006 to 2014. Seesondee was a challenging opponent, having claimed Asian Games silver last year and bronze at the 2014 Worlds. Earlier in the week, The Irish Examiner reported that Irish light-heavyweight boxer, Joe Ward came out in support of Harrington, saying she could "go all the way". This sentiment was mirrored by Irish head coach, Zaur Antia, the publication reported:

"Kellie is very focused and sharp. She has won four fights so far and performed brilliantly. We have a good approach and we’ve got confidence."
