Early on Tuesday morning tragic news from Berkeley, Cailfornia confirmed Irish students were killed in a tragic balcony accident.
A balcony, attached to an apartment on Kittredge St where Irish students were hosting a 21st birthday party, collapsed with thirteen young people believed to have fallen.
Five were pronounced dead at the scene, with news later this evening confirming that a sixth student had died.
The six students have now been named as Ashley Donohoe 22, Olivia Burke, 21, Eimear Walsh, 21, Eoghan Culligan, 21, Niccolai Schuster, 21 and Lorcan Miller, 21.
According to RTE News, Ireland’s Consul General Philip Grant confirmed that the first family members of those involved in the tragedy are expected to arrive in the US this evening.
Speaking to reporters earlier today the Minister confirmed that all of those killed were Irish students who were in the U.S. on temporary visas. He added that a 21st birthday party was underway in the building at the time of the accident.
The incident occurred on a fourth floor apartment at the Library Gardens apartment complex, one block from the University of California Campus, just before 1am local time.
Many of those wounded are still in a critical condition.
