Maisie Elizabeth Kehoe was having a normal morning at home in Sydney when she suffered a seizure.
Her parents, Conor and Danielle rushed her to hospital, but sadly their one-year-old's condition worsened.
It is understood that Maisie had Leigh Syndrome, but doctors initially thought she was suffering from meningitis.
Leigh syndrome is an inherited neurometabolic disorder that affects the central nervous system.
Little Maisie fought all weekend but sadly passed away on July 8th.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help her family during this distressing time.
A statement issued on behalf of the family said their world has been "turned upside down" after Maisie's untimely death.
"Maisie fought bravely all weekend with Conor and Danielle by her side, but sadly, we lost her on Monday evening. Initially, the doctors suspected meningitis, but it has now been confirmed that Maisie had Leigh Syndrome, a very rare neurometabolic disorder.
"This is absolutely devastating for Conor and Danielle, and they face a long road to recovery," the statement continued.
"This GoFundMe has been set up to help ease some of the financial pressure on them during this incredibly difficult time.
"We all know the costs associated with such situations can be overwhelming. Even raising enough funds to cover their rent during this period would make a massive difference."
Maisie's parents took the time to praise the doctors and nurses at Sydney Children's Hospital in Randwick and the Kevin Bell trust fund.
