The count started nationwide at 9am this morning and it has been reported that early tallies are showing a ‘Yes’ victory.

According to reports, the ‘Yes’ vote is showing up on a two to one majority in Dublin and in a number of other areas.

However, campaigners are warning that it is still early in the count and that there are a number of boxes yet to be tallied.

Leo Varadkar told RTÉ that today is a wonderful day for Ireland.

“If there are any going to be any constituencies that vote no, it’ll only be a handful,” he stated.

“It makes it a really historic day for Ireland. We are the first country in the world to enshrine marriage equality in the Constitution by a popular mandate.

“That makes us a beacon, a light for the rest of the world for liberty and equality,” he continued, adding: “It’s a very proud day to be Irish.”

Rónán Mullen meanwhile stated that he is “very disappointed” with the result.

He added that the No campaign was up against a ‘talented, well-resourced, skilled’ campaign.

The formal announcement of the result is not expected to take place until later this afternoon.
