She told Mumsnet that she felt 'effectively single' because he wasn't making any effort with her or their relationship.
Like many couples, the pair got comfortable quite quickly but she started to feel unhappy.
She told Mumsnet: "Long relationship but never lived together (both have kids majority of time, now nearly all adults), always intended to be long term with merging homes sometimes in the future."
The woman explained that she had been spurred by several 'life's too short' moments which made her look at her relationship differently.
"I had several discussions about how I'm unhappy I'm still effectively single, with zero plans to formalise anything.
She explained to her partner that she wasn't happy and ended things, but she then discovered he had been planning a proposal all along.
"I wound myself into a ball and blurted out how unhappy I was and didn't see us moving forward.
"I couldn't stay a moment longer in an uncertain unhappy future-less relationship.
"Turns out he's spoken to my parents and his about proposing and a jeweler was waiting for the right time.
She is heartbroken because she's ruined the surprise, but has also ended their relationship.
If they get back together, things will be changed forever.
"Having some sort of sparkly trinket does not change the domestic situation.
"Or his apparent reasons for not being prepared to merge things up to now - is it just a 'keep her sweet for another few years' gesture?" she wondered.
What would you do in this situation?

‘I’m a 35-year-old in HR, earning €26k, and this was my biggest financial mistake’
I’m a 35-year-old in HR, earning €26k, and this was my biggest financial mistake Let’s be honest, most of us are at least a little bit nosy when it comes to money. We want to know what other people are earning, how they’re actually getting by, and what their spending really looks like (not the […]
