The glamourised drug has become increasingly popular since multiple Hollywood celebrities credited it to weight loss.
However, the drug is not as accessible in Ireland as it is in Hollywood. A GP needs to prescribe it for those with diabetes as it is only licensed for that use in our country.
According to the HSE, a GP may also prescribe medicine to treat obesity. They will also encourage their patients to introduce lifestyle changes like eating healthier and exercising more.
The Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) issued a report where it was revealed that 656 units of fake Ozempic were seized in Ireland within the first five months of 2024.
Only 254 units were seized in Ireland for all of 2023.
The Irish public has been warned not to purchase Ozempic from unknown sources, especially online.
Celebrities may have turned the drug into an accessory of sorts, but doctors have stressed that there are far healthier ways to lose weight.
A study by Diabetes Strong, found that ‘how to get ozempic?’ is the most Googled question about the medication.
However, experts have stressed that it should not be used as a quick fix for weight loss.
“Despite the drug being extremely popular on social media because of many influencers and celebrities using it for weight loss, it is important to underline how the medication is studied and made for people with type 2 diabetes. It is not FDA-approved for weight loss or chronic weight management.
“Ozempic and other medications containing semaglutide should not be taken lightly.
"They present a series of side effects that can be severe and cause discomfort.”
