Feeling stuck? Experts reveal the best way to get out of a rut

Niamh Ryan

We’ve all been in a rut at one point or another

When we get into a weekly routine of work, eating, and sleeping, life can very quickly start to feel boring and repetitive.

It’s easy to feel down about it, but there are a few things we can do to get ourselves out of a slump.

Change up your look

There’s a reason people chop off and dye their hair after a breakup.

For some, it’s a way to reintroduce some control in their life. For others, a haircut signals a new chapter in their life.

If you feel a bit bored with your appearance, don’t be afraid to shake things up.

Look around for some inspiration and go for a consultation with a hairdresser – sometimes it takes fresh eyes to see what new style will compliment us most.

Whether you decide to go for a big chop or a vibrant new colour, changing up your hair can make a big difference.

You can also try new makeup or wear colours you don’t normally go for.

Make a new routine

It’s hard to fit activities into an already packed schedule when you’re working full-time.

Life can become more about convenience than anything else, and we find ourselves eating the same dinners, watching the same shows, etc.

Sometimes the best remedy for that feeling of sameness is to force ourselves into a new routine.

Try implementing a new morning routine. Wake up earlier than normal and get out for a walk, or book yourself into an exercise class.

If you always go to the same places for lunch or coffee then why not try a new spot?

Swap out your cappuccino for a matcha, or treat yourself to a hot chocolate on your way home.

Even finding quick and easy dinners online can make the world of a difference.

Clean your space

They say that our rooms are a reflection of our minds. Whether you believe that or not, I know I always feel better when I’ve cleaned my room or rearranged it.

One of the many benefits of being the youngest child is that when my siblings moved out, I could move rooms.

Even though it’s something small, having all of my things in new places helped me get out of a rut.

Those things added to the feeling of having a mundane daily routine, but now that my room is different, my routine feels different.

Even rearranging furniture around your house can make you feel like you’re in a new space. Trust me, it works.

No matter what kind of a rut you’re in, taking small steps can really make a difference.
