Applying your skincare in the shower is bad for your skin, experts warn

Kat O'Connor

It’s time to stop cleansing your skin in the shower

Cleansing our skin is something we do every day but some of us may be making a major skincare error.

If, like us, you’re always trying to make your beauty routine shorter then you may cleanse your skin in the shower.

It may seem harmless, but this habit is actually causing more issues for your skin.

According to experts, applying cleanser in the shower is not ideal because the conditions are poorer for your skin.

The water will often be too hot causing your skin to dry out. We’re also exposing our skin to hot water for way too long which can damage the skin’s barrier.

It’s also a bad move to apply your skincare before your shower as the heat and steam will strip away the products, as well as your natural oils.

Your skin will be in need of more products after a hot shower, which means you’re not only damaging your skin but you’re also wasting more products than you realise.

Hot showers can lead to drying, itching, and irritation so applying your products, including cleansers, afterward is key.

So when should I apply my skincare?

The best time to apply your skincare is after your shower in the morning or evening. Give your skin some time to breathe after the shower and then apply the products. Your skin will feel replenished and fresh after applying your everyday products especially as the shower can dry it out.

Your skin’s barrier function will already be compromised following your shower so applying hydrating products after it will give it a well-needed boost of hydration.
