Tommy Fury confirmed his alcohol dependency led to his split from Molly-Mae
Tommy Fury has opened up about his struggles with alcohol dependency in a new interview with Men’s Health. The dad admitted his struggles were the main reason he broke up with Molly-Mae with Fury admitting he couldn’t be the partner he wanted to be because of his issues.
Speaking about his personal experience, Tommy Fury said: “There’s been so much shit in the papers every single day for the past six months: “Cheater, cheater, cheater; he slept with me; he slept with this girl”. Complete and utter bollocks. And you can ask Molly herself.
“The reason why me and Molly broke up was because I got addicted to alcohol and I couldn’t be the partner that I wanted to be anymore.”
Tommy added, “It kills me to say it, [but] it’s true, I couldn’t. I loved a pint of beer, loved to drink, and it is what it is. People go through different things in life and we all have our crosses to bear. I’ve got mine to bear.”
The emotional interview has sparked a conversation about alcohol dependency and how to support people with it.
Experts at the HSE have shared the signs of alcohol dependence that we should look out for.
The main signs include:
- not seeming to be drunk after drinking large amounts
- not being able to function without alcohol – for example, not being able to do your job or carry out daily tasks
- drinking has become an important, or the most important, thing in life
- continuing to drink despite negative consequences for you or your loved ones
- finding it difficult to control the amount or the times when you drink
- finding it difficult to stop drinking when you want to
- not always being able to plan with certainty how much you are going to drink on an occasion
- drinking increasing amounts of alcohol
- craving alcohol or having withdrawal symptoms
Those who are dependent on alcohol will drink a lot of the time or first thing in the morning. They may often drink every evening or even every day.
The key side effects of alcohol dependency include spending a lot of time thinking and planning what and when you will be able to drink. Other symptoms include feeling anxious, unhappy, and tense until you have a drink and feeling generally unwell.
Tommy Fury has been praised for helping raise awareness and for highlighting this pressing issue.
The HSE has acknowledged that it can be incredibly difficult to stop drinking when you’re suffering from alcohol dependency but stressed that it can be done.
