UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and Ballymena-born actor Liam Neeson has lent his face to a new global campaign aimed at ending violence against children.

Neeson, who began supporting UNICEF Ireland in 1997, features in a powerful video released today urging people to “Speak Out, Take Action” when faced with incidents of violence against children.

The initiative hopes to encourage the development of global, national and local movements to fight violence against children.

Accoring to UNICEF, a shocking 150 million girls and 73 million boys under 18 years worldwide have experienced sexual violence and exploitation.

“This campaign is about protecting children. Whether it is in the home or online, on a local street or in another country, such as the case of 14-year-old Malala Yousafzai who was shot by the Taliban in Pakistan, the message is clear – violence against children should not be tolerated” said Peter Power, Executive Director of UNICEF Ireland.

“UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Liam Neeson’s call to make the invisible visible is particularly relevant in this country as we come to terms with a devastating legacy where children were not listened to and abuse when reported was ignored.“

“We must take all necessary measures to ensure that children in Ireland are safe from violence.”

UNICEF Ireland is also calling on young people to “Speak Out, Take Action” when they witness violence against their friends and classmates. A recent study by the organisation showed a worrying rise in bullying in Ireland.

“Violence destroys children and childhoods. We hope that this video will start a conversation in the home, in workplaces, in school and online about what we can do to prevent it,” Peter Power concluded.
