Season 6 is now in pre-production and viewers have been told to “expect the unexpected”. Bring it on.
While we’re not saying that the cast and crew of Peaky Binders are anything like their whiskey-chugging characters, we’re certain that a few celebratory drinks were in order after the show’s most recent success.
At the NTA Awards on Tuesday night, Steven Knight’s gangster epic won Best Drama, while Cillian Murphy received the Best Drama Performance for his role as Tommy Shelby.
At the awards, Knight confirmed that Season 6 will be set in the 1930s.
In an interview with PA, Knight said: “(It’s going to be) better than ever. It’s the best yet. It’s moving the story forward. We always jump in time so we are into the ’30s. Expect the unexpected.
“Because of the nature of the decade, the 30s, we know what happened at the end – that war began. There are rumblings and rumours of war and that is overshadowing the whole thing. It makes it all the more… the stakes are higher.”
Knight’s decision to move Peaky Blinders into the 1930s is in keeping with his overall plan for the ending the show as he has previously said that he sees the gangster epic ending as the first siren for World War II is heard.
As far as Season 6 is concerned, we know that the first episode is called Black Day and that Dubliner Anthony Byrne is returning behind the lens to direct the new episodes.
Aside from the return of all the main Shelby family members, Steven Knight has also confirmed that the character of Oswald Mosley (Sam Claflin) will be coming back and that the producers are looking to cast an actor for the role of Diana Mitford, Mosley’s second wife.
The continued presence of Mosley as a recurring antagonist in the show was always likely given his importance to British history.
In a previous interview with JOE, Knight told JOE that the Shelbys will continue to have dealings in the US and there’s also a very interesting theory that Tommy will cross paths with Adolf Hitler in the near future.
Whatever Season 6 has in store, we’re looking forward to it already.
