If you're on the lookout for some great new additions to Netflix, then you're in luck.
The streaming service has just added a hugely underseen crime flick with some great reviews - Confess, Fletch.
Based on Gregory McDonald's 1976 novel of the same name, the 2022 crime comedy mystery stars Jon Hamm as Fletch, who becomes the prime suspect in a murder, while simultaneously searching for his girlfriend's stolen art collection.
This is the third instalment in the Fletch series, with the other two films starring Chevy Chase in the titular role, and is directed by Superbad's Greg Mottola.
The film also stars Roy Wood Jr., Annie Mumolo, Ayden Mayeri, Lorenza Izzo, Kyle MacLachlan, and Hamm's Mad Men co-star John Slattery.
Released in limited cinemas while people were still slowly returning after the pandemic, Confess, Fletch gained less than a million dollars at the box office, on a $20 million budget and, while reviews were largely positive, a sequel has recently been canned, with Mottola saying the head of Miramax shot down the project.
"I was told ‘the first one lost money’ — as if there had been any attempt to make money," he said on X.
"Jon [Hamm] was very into the new script. I’ve been rather depressed about it, but hard to expect a good break in the feature world these days."
At least now you can catch Confess, Fletch on Netflix, which is perfect for anybody who loves easy-breezy murder mysteries with a throwback feel to 80s detective shows.
Who knows, maybe the flick's popularity on the streamer might secure a sequel some day, so get watching.
The Guardian - "It’s amiable entertainment, and Hamm may well develop in the character if this becomes a franchise."
Empire - "Even if you’re wholly unfamiliar with the franchise, Confess, Fletch will find fans among anyone who likes mystery-comedies, wickedly dry humour, and the sight of Kyle MacLachlan twirling glow-sticks to club music."
The Daily Beast - "It’s difficult to remember a recent American comedy with so many strong supporting performances, much less one that spins them around a headliner who’s as nonchalantly magnetic as Hamm."
Rolling Stone - "It’s a perfectly delightful throwback to an age when a comic mystery fueled by someone with a screen-friendly persona and even more screen-friendlier good looks weren’t an anomaly, and a perfect vehicle for Hamm."
The Wrap - "An average scene in “Confess, Fletch” features several different kinds of humor, including callbacks, running jokes, physical comedy, and character-driven wordplay, all of which either flatter the actors or show off how well they work with their co-stars."
