The global licensing deal means the first season is currently unavailable on the RTÉ Player.
The second season of Irish crime drama Kin wrapped on RTÉ, earlier this month, with an explosive final episode that leaves the Kinsella family dealing with some big headaches, and far-reaching consequences.
The first season of the series, co-created by Peter McKenna and Ciaran Donnelly, aired in September 2021 and starred big-name talents such as Aiden Gillen and Ciarán Hinds.
However, actors such as Clare Dunne, Yasmin Seky and Emmett Scanlan also drew in audiences with their performances, and character arcs.
Season two premiered for its’ eight-episode run on March 19 and attracted steady audiences in its’ prime-time Sunday evening slot. Filming for season three of the show has already begun with RTÉ commissioning season four.
All is going well, so, aside from a licensing quirk that means season one is not available to view on the RTÉ Player. It will return, later this year, but the clock has already begun on accessing season two on the player.
Where to watch Kin, season one
For anyone in Ireland that may have come late to Kin, and enjoyed season two, they will be perplexed not to find season one on the RTÉ Player.
That is, as reported by The Sunday Independent, because of a deal worked out by primary producers, Bron Studios and Headline Pictures, in association with RTÉ and with backing from Screen Ireland.
The show’s global licensing partners include AMC Networks, which loops in the UK, USA and Canada. Under the agreement, the RTÉ Player gets a season of Kin for the first 12 months. AMC then gets exclusivity for the next 12 months before it returns to RTÉ and is permitted to feature on the player again.
That means season one of Kin should be back on the player from September of this year. It also means season two is available until the middle of March 2024.
In the mean-time, for anyone in Ireland looking to catch up on season one, it is available to buy on DVD or Blu-Ray.
