On this day 60 years ago, Warner Brothers premiered the first 3D film, House of Wax, which is still a cult favourite today. When more films started to get the 3D treatment at the beginning of the millennium, many dismissed it as a fad. However, now, with more of the heavy-weight directors getting behind it, it looks like 3D is firmly here to stay. So let’s get used to it! Here are fifteen films that are worth catching in “glorious” 3D.
1. Hugo
Scorsese’s venture into the 3D world turned out to be pretty spectacular and given the subject matter, it actually worked.
2. The Hobbit
What can we say, Peter Jackson and Middle Earth. Glorious.
3. Prometheus
If you were lucky enough to see this in the IMAX AND in 3D, well that was worth it. Plot flaws? What plot flaws?
4. The Amazing Spiderman
There was an action scene towards the end of this film which warranted the use of 3D alone.
5. Toy Story 3
Disney Pixar tend to go for more depth on the screen than objects actually flying towards you and it works here. On the other hand, the 3D does darken the beautiful animation.
6. The Avengers
Chris Hemsworth... In 3D. Sold.
7. Oz the Great and Powerful
Despite our concerns about this beautifully shot film appearing dull on screen, Oz in 3D works...
8. Finding Nemo
We talked about Disney favouring depth in their work, Finding Nemo works way better because the screen appears to look like a massive aquarium...
9. Avatar
James Cameron still believes he invented 3D.
10. Tron Legacy
The computer game universe works exceeding well in 3D. It’s almost like you are in the... Wait.
11. Corline
Widely regarded as one of the finest animated uses of 3D, Coraline is one of those films that deserves to be seen in all its glory on the big screen.
12. The Nightmare Before Christmas
One Her.ie staff member had to be calmed down by an eight year old boy when the pumpkin came out of the screen at the start...
13. Life of Pi
Not dark, just stunningly beautiful colour and striking depth, Life of Pi was just a wonderful film to look at...
14. The Hole
This horror which was for adults and young adults alike has some of the best uses of 3D. It may be that 3D was invented for this genre...
15. Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters
Yes, those nails were coming out of the screen.
Warning, the above clips will not simulate the 3D experience...
