Ellen Pompeo is returning to Grey’s Anatomy after shock exit

Kat O'Connor

Grey’s Anatomy just wasn’t the same without Meredith Grey

Ellen Pompeo leaving Grey’s Anatomy was a shock for fans of the medical drama series, but the actress has decided to return to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital once more.

Fans of the show know that saying goodbye to your favourite character is a huge part of the show. We’ve had our hearts broken by unexpected deaths, surprising exits, and torn in two following that plane crash.

One thing Grey’s does perfectly is giving their most popular characters a dramatic and heartbreaking exit.

One star we were shocked to say goodbye to was lead actress, Ellen Pompeo.

Despite stepping away from the series, Pompeo has confirmed she will return for at least four episodes in the upcoming 20th season.

It’s hard to believe the medical drama has been going for 20 seasons, but the show is still incredibly popular with viewers.

It has seen some major stars become household names like Sandra Oh, Katherine Heigl, Patrick Dempsey, and Jesse Williams, but the cast has transformed in recent years with many leaving the show.

Pompeo stepped back from playing Meredith but continued to work as executive producer on the show. She also still provides the opening and closing voiceovers on the show, but her character will be more present this season.

Speaking in Variety’s ‘Actors on Actors’, she told former co-star Katherine Heigl that she isn’t saying a ‘complete goodbye’ just yet.

“I will be making some appearances hopefully next year if I can find some time. It’s not a complete goodbye. And I think we’ve got an interesting story to tell,” she shared.

There is no Grey’s Anatomy without Meredith Grey. Maybe it’s time for the show to bid farewell if its lead actress is also ready to hang up her scrubs.
