Call the Midwife returns this Christmas
A brand new episode of Call the Midwife will air on Christmas Day this year, but fans are in store for quite the emotional rollercoaster.
Lead actress Jenny Agutter has warned fans that this year’s Christmas special is pretty dark compared to other episodes.
She told Radio Times: “For me, when I read it, I was very touched by it. It’s quite Dickensian.
“It is quite dark, but in with that is a lot of humour and a lot of humanity, and that’s what lightens it,” she explained.
Her co-star Laura Main said the episode acknowledges the people of Poplar are going through hard times.
“It’s just the recognition that we’re in difficult times, we’ve been in difficult times, we always were in difficult times. It just recognises that.”
She added: “I think it also feels really apt as a Christmas story to not just be full of joy and cheer because life doesn’t stop for Christmas.”
“Life can be difficult, and so that’s reflected in the story. To take a moment to think of others, and see people serving others, is a nice message at Christmas.”
There’s no doubt the Call the Midwife Christmas special will tug on our heartstrings as it does every year, but you may need to have some tissues nearby as this year’s episode sounds like an emotional watch.
The episode will reportedly end on a cliffhanger but new episodes are expected to air in the spring of 2025.
