A piece of festive magic has been shattered
It seems the idyllic cottage from The Holiday, the 2006 rom-com starring Jude Law and Cameron Diaz, is nothing more than a beautifully constructed illusion.
Yes, you read that right. The beautiful Cotswolds retreat that perfectly captures the charm of Christmas doesn’t actually exist.
Law dropped the bombshell during an interview on BBC Radio, much to the horror of the programme’s hosts.
“That cottage doesn’t exist,” he revealed, enjoying their dismay.
It’s a revelation that feels almost cruel, especially this close to Christmas, when many of us dream of cozying up in just such a place.
The Holiday’s charming cottage might be one of Nancy Meyer’s most iconic creations, embodying the dream of a picturesque, snow-dusted English holiday.
However, according to Law, Meyers couldn’t find a real-life home that fit her exacting vision.
“She’s a bit of a perfectionist,” Law explained. “She toured that whole area and didn’t quite find the chocolate-box cottage she was looking for.
“So she just hired a field, drew it, and had someone build it.”
This isn’t the first time the truth about the cottage has been called into question.
Production designers on the film have previously stated that its exterior was based on a real structure but was rebuilt brick by brick on a Hollywood soundstage.
Law’s account muddies the waters further, suggesting Meyers designed the cottage entirely from scratch.
Either way, it’s hard not to feel a pang of betrayal.
