X-Factor star Christopher Maloney has blamed Twitter trolls as the motivation behind undergoing extensive plastic surgery – claiming he was being abused daily on the social media site.

The 46 year old Liverpudlian was a guest on This Morning when he revealed the taunts from online trolls left him battling with his self-esteem.

The singer, who came third in the reality show in 2012, has undergone three hair transplants, an eye lift and a nose job. He’s also had dental cosmetic surgery for his teeth.

Speaking to Phillip Schofield, Christopher said:

“X Factor was great, but as the series was going on and the further that I got in the competition, I was getting really bad trolls and they were telling me that they were going to kill me, shoot me, I was called Mr Potato Head, that I was ugly, that I had a big nose and it just affected me so much and at the end of the final, I did have a breakdown.”

Despite support from the X-Factor team and mentor Gary Barlow, Christopher checked himself into The Priory for treatment.

He continued to say that despite constant assurance from friends and family, he became repulsed by his own reflection and started his cosmetic surgery treatments in 2013.

Although Christopher said he didn’t blame the X-Factor for his troubles, he did warn other potential contestants to consider whether they are strong enough to withstand the constant attention and sometimes harsh negativity:

“You are catapulted to stardom but for me it was tarnished by trolls – don’t listen to them.

“I didn’t have surgery for vanity, I did for it me but I don’t recommend going under knife if you don’t need to.”
