Victoria and David Beckham’s relationship has been a subject of media interest for nearly thirty years
This fascination was shown in the Netflix documentary Beckham – which aired last year – giving fans a glimpse into David’s rapid ascent in the world of football from his early days at Manchester United.
Beyond his career, the series showed the intense media scrutiny the couple faced when they first began dating in 1997 – a period marked by unrelenting press intrusion that affected their lives both as personally and as a couple.
Reflecting on those days in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Victoria shared her perspective on how far they’ve come, noting how much the experience would differ if their children were to face similar attention today.
She said: “When it happened, David was the same age that Romeo is now. That’s a lot for a 22-year-old.”
Victoria acknowledged how hard it was to put up with that level of scrutiny at such a young age, describing a sense of “sink-or-swim” in the face of constant public attention.
“When you’re in it, there’s that sink-or-swim feeling, and you just get on with it,” she said.
“We had each other, and the rest is history. But the thought of my Romeo having to go through it… I don’t know how he would handle that.
“I don’t know how anyone would handle that. But we didn’t have a choice.”
After 25 years of marriage, Victoria reflected on how their approach to fame has evolved.
“We’ve kind of figured out how to be quite discreet, which is just how we want to conduct our lives right now,” she said.
“It used to be fun to go out and be chased by paparazzi… but I don’t want that anymore.”
Today, the Beckhams have chosen to lead a more private life, setting boundaries around their public appearances and how they engage with the media.
Following the success of Beckham, the spotlight will soon turn to Victoria herself.
Netflix recently announced a docuseries that will feature Victoria, following her ventures in the fashion and beauty industries.
This new series promises to delve into her life as a designer and entrepreneur, offering an updated perspective on Victoria’s evolution from pop star to business mogul.
The Beckhams may still be a focal point in popular culture, but now, the narrative is largely on their own terms.
