It was an unforgettable week for the Mescal family as Paul Mescal’s latest film, the highly anticipated Gladiator II, premiered in Dublin.
The red carpet was a gathering of fans and stars alike, but it was Paul’s family who shared in the most personal and memorable moments of the evening.
The 28-year-old actor drew crowds eager to catch a glimpse of him as he stepped out to celebrate the premiere.
Fans lined the carpet, hoping for a photo or a quick exchange, and Paul didn’t disappoint.
Stopping to take selfies with a few lucky admirers, he soaked in the electric atmosphere before joining the screening.
In Gladiator II, directed by Ridley Scott, Paul portrays Lucius Verus, the son of Lucilla, in a powerful role alongside an all-star cast including Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, and Stranger Things actor Joseph Quinn.
The film, a sequel to Scott’s iconic 2000 blockbuster, is expected to make waves, and the Dublin premiere marked a significant milestone in Paul’s career.
Reflecting on this monumental moment, Paul’s mother, Dearbhla Mescal, joined RTÉ Radio 1’s Miriam O’Callaghan to share what it felt like to see her son’s achievements recognised.
“To hear your child’s name being shouted and the fabulous music of The Gladiator behind it was pretty awe-inspiring,” she said.
Dearbhla, who recently shared the happy news that her cancer is in remission, was a vision of elegance on the red carpet in a floor-length sequin gown.
She reunited with Paul for a lovely moment and said: “I got very emotional. It was one of those moments, like a wedding, where you’re sharing something so big, but there are cameras everywhere!”
In a touching gesture, Paul also invited Dearbhla’s doctor to attend the premiere as a way of expressing his family’s gratitude for the care that helped her on her journey back to health.
Dearbhla told listeners how much this meant to her. “It was so lovely to see him there, outside of the usual context,” she said.
Updating fans on her recovery, Dearbhla shared that her body is responding well to treatment, describing herself as “very lucky and feeling very blessed.”
