Nobody can deny Shirley Bassey knows her stuff. With 60 years in the music industry, the singer has warned stars like Beyonce and Rihanna to cover-up and work on their music careers instead.
The Diamonds Are Forever singer was speaking at a book launch when she advised the young singers to cover up and instead concentrate on making music:
“It’s like they’re all in competition with each other for who can wear the skimpiest outfit. In my day it was for the stage only you didn’t go out like it. When I saw the Met Ball the other day – excuse me!”
Referring to the sheer and near nude garments from this year’s Met Ball, the 78-year old continued:
“All the young girls of today want to dress like that. These girls are talented singers, they don’t need that but they feel they do have to be in competition to have the least covering. That’s the saddest thing.”
The Welsh singer acknowledged that her own dance routines had been sexy, but she had been careful not to reveal too much. Instead she gave the girls another way of getting noticed:
“I think you have to leave a lot to the imagination – yes my dance was sexy and my dress had slits down to here, but I left a lot to the imagination. I didn’t show everything.
“Go in the studio and sing your heart out. Get a vocal coach strengthen your vocal chords.”
