Meryl Streep secretly separated from husband Don Gummer six years ago

Meryl Streep may have taken a leaf from Jada Pinkett Smith's book.

"Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than six years," they said, adding, "and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart."

The two met while the 'Mamma Mia' star was mourning the loss of her boyfriend and fellow actor John Cazale who had died after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

Meryl married sculptor Don back in 1978 and the former couple have four children together: musician Henry, 43, and Mamie, 40, Grace, 37, and Louisa, 32 - who have all followed their mother into acting.

They also have five grandchildren, with daughter Grace most recently welcoming a daughter with Grammy-winning British musician Mark Ronson.

Don was there for Meryl's first Oscars show with her in 1979 as newlyweds.

While she didn't get a chance to thank him in 1983 when she won the statue for 'Sophie's Choice,' the star made it up to him when she took home her third trophy in 2012.

"First, I'm going to thank Don," she said, "because when you thank your husband at the end of the speech they play him out with the music, and I want him to know that everything I value most in our lives, you've given me."

The last time the couple made a public appearance was back at the 2018 Academy Awards when they walked the red carpet together.

Yet despite the news of their split becoming public, Meryl was spotted on Friday at the Princesa de Asturias Awards 2023 wearing her wedding ring.
