Louis Walsh has opened up about his unexpected cancer diagnosis and shared the great news that he is now in remission
The renowned music manager revealed earlier this year that he was diagnosed with Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia, a rare and slow-progressing form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
This uncommon cancer affects plasma cells in the blood.
The Mayo native underwent treatment at the Mater Private Hospital in Dublin and gave his sincere thanks for the care he received, saying: “I’m fine now. I’m in remission.”
In a recent interview on Nicky Byrne’s podcast, Nicky Byrne HQ, Walsh reflected on the experience.
“I’m feeling good. I didn’t know anything was wrong until I went to the Mater Private for a check-up,” he said.
“That’s when I found out about Waldenstrom cancer. It’s a blood cancer, but it’s manageable, and I’m lucky to be in remission.”
Speaking of the initial shock of his diagnosis, the 72-year-old admitted: “Hearing the word ‘cancer’ is terrifying.
“You can’t help but think the worst. But modern medicine is incredible, and the doctors and nurses at the Mater Private are amazing.
“They’re the real stars – they work tirelessly to save lives. Thanks to them, I’m here, and I’m healthy.”
While Walsh has made a full recovery, he acknowledged that the journey took a toll on him both physically and mentally.
“It took time to get back on my feet,” he shared. “The diagnosis was a lot to process. At first, I thought my tiredness was just due to a busy work schedule with The X Factor.
“But, after further testing, they discovered the rare form of cancer. Thankfully, it’s under control now.”
Walsh highlighted the importance of getting medical advice if something feels off, and said: “If I hadn’t gone for that check-up, I might not have known. It’s rare, but they can manage it – and I’m living proof.”
