Fearne Cotton opens up about living with depression

Megan Roantree

She also talks about what helps her cope with it.

We’ve always been a fan of Fearne Cotton, mostly for her sleek yet simple style that we can only dream of achieving.

But we’re also very fond of the presenter for opening up about her depression diagnosis, helping to normalise the illness and reduce the stigma attached.

Fearne is releasing a new book called Happy which will be released in February 2017.

The book focuses on helping people feel good with honest accounts and practical exercises.

Fearne talked about the new book in Glamour, and discussed how no one is exempt from depression and mental health issues.

”There might be assumptions made that if you are on TV or have experienced a certain journey in life then you should be immune to depression or sorrow.” She said.

”Having come from a lovely working class background to stumbling into the industry I work in, now I know how little these associations have a bearing on your inner happiness.”

There is certainly still a myth or assumption about how depression can only affect those who are not doing well in everyday life or that it cannot affect anyone who is rich or famous, which is incredibly inaccurate.

She spoke about the importance of being surrounded by good people and good experiences.

”To me the only things that make a true impact on my own happiness are who I’m surrounded by, how much I let seemingly stressful events affect me and how I spend my time.

Simple pleasures like being with my family, getting out in the fresh air, eating healthy food and music are all small things that impact my happiness daily. For me it’s all about those small steps in the right direction rather than huge leaps where there are no guarantees.”

We’re looking forward to reading Fearne’s new book.
