Huge congrats to Mona.
Sligo native Mona McSharry has qualified for the 2024 Olympics in Paris after setting an Irish record in the 100m breaststroke at the World Aquatics Championship in Fukuoka, Japan. The swimmer managed to complete the 100m in 1:05.55, which was her first time clocking in under 1:06.

McSharry won her heat, so she will now proceed into the semi-finals, which take place this afternoon.
According to RTÉ News:
“The Sligo swimmer was the second fastest across all the heats and progresses to the semi-final, which will take place on Monday afternoon. Only Lithuania’s Ruta Meilutyte managed a faster time than McSharry in the heats.”
RTÉ News also reported that The World Aquatics Championships is the first of three chances for Irish swimmers to secure Olympic places. They can also do so at the World Aquatics Championships in Doha, Qatar in February 2024, and the Irish Open Swimming Championships in May 2024.
