Preventing STIs and an unplanned pregnancy – what could be better?
It’s pretty easy to practise safe sex to be honest – condoms are cheap and actually free if you’re in college – woohoo!
However, it has come to our attention that many people are doing their very best but still coming up short. They’re buying the condom (we assume) and giving their best attempt at putting it on correctly but somewhere, something goes wrong.
It’s pretty worrying because Sexually Transmitted Infections are on the rise in Ireland. Over 14,000 STIs were diagnosed in Ireland in 2018 and the most at-risk people are 18 to 30-year-olds. So we decided to get real and have a little look at our use of contraception. And we think you should too.
Of course, it’s important to choose the right contraception for your lifestyle but, in the end, condoms are the only contraception that can reduce your risk of contracting an STI. So, unless you’re in a long-term, committed relationship (and often even then), you should know how to properly use a condom and you should make sure that you’re using it the correct way every time. Otherwise, accidents are a whole lot more likely to happen.
