Yellow weather warning issued for snow and ice in numerous counties

Sarah McKenna Barry

The warning comes into effect at 10pm this evening.

Met Éireann has issued a Yellow weather warning ahead of the arrival of snow and ice in three counties this evening.

The affected counties are Donegal, Sligo and Leitrim.

The warning comes into effect at 10pm this evening and it will remain until 10am tomorrow morning.

The full weather notice reads: “Blustery showers of hail, sleet and snow with icy stretches on untreated surfaces will lead to hazardous driving conditions on Wednesday night and Thursday morning.”

There is also a Yellow wind and snow warning in place from the UK Met office for Antrim, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry. This will become valid at 1pm this afternoon, and it will stay in place until 3pm tomorrow.

The Yellow weather warning reads: “Frequent heavy snow showers are expected, along with very gusty winds and a small chance of frequent lightning affecting some places.”

Today will get off to sunny and slightly blustery start, and by late morning, a band of rain will move into the northwestern parts of the country, before becoming widespread.

Highest temperatures will be between 6 and 11 degrees, but by evening, we can expect wintery showers, as well as a drop in temperature. Lowest temperatures will be between -2 and 1 degrees, though an “added wind chill’ factor will make it feel even colder.

The Irish Meteorological Service has said that it will feel “raw” tonight, with “brisk westerly winds feeding in a scattering of snow, sleet and rain showers”.

There is also a chance of isolated thunderstorms, and some hail.

Frost and ice have also been forecast, especially, Met Éireann says, in “sheltered areas”.

Tomorrow morning, the service has warned that “snow showers and icy stretches during the morning will lead to treacherous conditions in parts”.

We may also expect thundery showers and hail, particularly in the west and north of the country. Highest temperatures tomorrow will be between 3 and 7 degrees, but again, the wind chill factor will make it feel even colder.
