The weather will clear up today – but not for long

Temperatures are set to plummet.

Anna O'Rourke

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…

OK, so it’s not quite Christmas yet but we can expect some very chilly conditions over the next 24 hours.

After a day of heavy rain across the country, not to mention a rainfall warning for Munster and Leinster, it’s forecast to be slightly drier today.

Met Éireann is predicting that today will be cold and bright with blustery winds coming in from the northwest.

There will be heavy showers in parts of the country today, some of which will turn wintry, especially over north and northwestern areas.

It should be less showery over Munster and Leinster in the later part of the day, however, which will hopefully give respite to those affected by flooding in the midlands yesterday.

Many families in Laois spent last night away from their homes due to the flood waters.

Temperatures of between 5 and 9 degrees are predicted for today, though they’ll take a turn this evening.

Met Éireann says tonight will be ‘very cold’ with widespread frost setting in after dark. It’ll turn icy in some places, so motorists travelling tonight or early tomorrow should take care.

There’ll be some scattered showers, mostly in Atlantic coastal areas, and temperatures will take a real dip with minimum temperatures of up to -3 degrees.
