A 24-year-old man has been fined for pretending to be a ghost in a graveyard in Portsmouth.

Anthony Stallard was apparently kicking a football about in Kingston Cemetery when he started making noises and throwing his arms in the vicinity of people visiting the graves of loved ones.

According to the Daily Echo, the police were alerted. They arrested and charged the man with using threatening or abusive words or behaviour likely to cause distress.

Prosecutor Tim Concannon told the  Magistrates’ Court: “While the football was going on, this defendant was effectively singing loudly and being disrespectful in among the graves.

“He was throwing himself backwards, waving his arms and going ‘woooooooh’. I’m assuming he was pretending to be a ghost”.

Stallard apparently admitted the charge and acknowledged the fact that his behaviour may have caused distress to mourners.

He was fined £35 and ordered to pay £20 as a victim surcharge as well as court costs of £20. Three months were also added to his existing suspended sentence stemming from an assault offence.
